St. Fiacc's National School

A huge thanks to Ms Minnock and the Students Council who bought and organised all our new books for the new classroom libraries. We have a fantastic variety of books available to all children to read from Junior Infants to 6th class. We really apprciate all the work that they have done over the past few months and we are so happy to have access to so many great books throughout the school!

Well done to our fantastic darts players who gave exhibition matches last Friday for Assembly. Jamie even shot a 180 live on assembly which was incredible but there are no surprises as he is number 10 in the world in his age category. Also congratulations Caylen and James who gave great performances on the day. A huge thanks to Mr ‘Killer’ Kelly and Ms Scully for organising such an informative and fun morning for the 5th class children. I was bowled over with the mental maths skills shown by the boys subtracting the scores not to mention their great darts skills- Maith sibh!

Fourth class room 13 enjoyed a 2 – D shape hunt around the school. We found lots of interesting regular and irregular shapes. We took pictures of them with the iPads and uploaded our pictures to Seesaw. Some children decided to make presentations on google slides!

Our Girls Soccer team finished in 2nd position in the FAI Carlow Schools competition last Friday having played really well in all their matches and narrowly missing out on the top spot. The boys team played great also and finished in 3rd position overall for Carlow. Well done to both teams and to the coaches; Ms Minnock, Ms Roche and Mr Roche.

Well done to our two Table Quiz Teams who represented St Fiacc’s N.S in thefinal of the St Abban’s Table Quiz series last Thursday. Both teams did really well finishing 10th and 11th out of 50 teams overall. Well done to Ms Hennessy for all her amazing coaching and we hope they will go from strength to strength over the coming months!

5th and 6th class students are busy this week starting their Maths lessons using Minecraft Education as part of our Digital Learning Framework and numeracy plan. Today we were learning about Area and Volume by using the Minecraft Education platform. 

Fourth class  room 13 have been exploring 2 – D shapes. We have used the Pro – Bots to draw 2 – D shapes, lines and angles. We have used tangrams to make pictures with our 2 – D shapes and we used peg boards and elastic lines to make 2 – d shapes.

Fourth class room 13 were learning about weight and measurement. We decided to put what we had learned into practice and make pancakes! They were delicious! We had lots of fun measuing the ingredients and even more fun tasting them!

Fourth class have been learning about length. We were using metre sticks to draw different lengths on the yard.

It was lots of fun!

Fourth class room 13 had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day. Some children dressed up as their favourite charachter and the they read an extract from their favourite books! It was a fun day!

On the 4th of March, our school choir set off to Waterford to perform in the Peace Proms concert. The children learned all their songs and dances and worked really hard in order to prepare for this day! We are really proud of our school choir. They performed brilliantly on the day and it was a great day!

4th class have been learning about 2 – D shapes. We have been learning about lines and angles and regular and irregular 2 – D shapes. We have explored 2 – D shapes using lollipop sticks!

During Seachtain na Gaeilge, the children in 4th class room 13 were learning some folk dancing! It was lots of fun!! Maith thú rang 4!

Thank you to the all the families and children from St. Fiacc’s that participated in the Graiguecullen St. Patrick’s day parade! The children had a great time singing and playing tunes on the tinwhistle. Despite the weather, we had a great time! Thank you also to the teachers who took part!

We had an awesome day today in Ballon (Burrin Celtic FC) at the FAI Carlow soccer First Round. Our Girls and Boys Teams both topped their group and now qualify for the County Finals on Friday. Our other Boys and Girls teams also participated really well with both winning their last game of the day, having played well in their previous games. As always St Fiacc’s were complimented on their Fair play, team work and great manners which is really important as well. A huge thanks to our coaches Ms Minnock, Ms Roche, Mr Roche and our TY student Adam who was a great help today.Best of luck in the Finals on Friday!

This week in 3rd class we designed and made catapults!

Mr Groarke’s class were busy this week planting potatoes in our school garden! They also checked out our herb garden where we smelt and ate some herbs ! It was great fun and we learned lots about how to plant potatoes properly. We will be keeping an eye on them over the coming months and will be able to harvest at the end of June as we went with First Early variety.

We had over 40 boys and 40 girls try out for our FAI 5 a side soccer Blitz which takes place in Ballon on March 23rd. It was a great afternoon last Thursday and all teams played 4 games with roll on, roll off substitutes. Well done to everyone for participating and congratulations to the few who were chosen to represent the school in a few weeks time.
