St. Fiacc's National School

Dermot and Joe from Carlow Fire Station paid the three Third Class groups a visit today and gave an excellent talk on fire safety. The boys and girls in Room 28 learned a great amount from their visit. We learned the emergency contacts numbers to call if there was a fire- 112 or 999! We learned the number one rule of fire safety – Get Out, Stay Out, Call Out! We talked about different fire hazards in our home and the importance of having working fire alarms and carbon monoxide alarms in our homes. Dermot and Joe also showed us the correct way to use a fire blanket and demonstrated stop, drop and roll for us. We have brought home a fire safety pack which includes reminders of what we learned today and a home checklist to be completed by each child with their family. Thanks to Dermot and Joe for visiting us today. Everyone in Third Class learned a lot.

This month, Third Class are learning about Germany and will complete projects in small groups based on their learning. We are aiming to find information about Germany using a variety of sources. Today, we used iPads as one resource for finding information on Germany. Using a list of topics and questions that we brainstormed, we used KidRex.org to search for information about Germany. We were excited to find plenty of information about Germany. We found out about Germany’s location, its population, the language spoken in Germany, some of its natural features including rivers and mountains and also learned about some of Germany’s famous landmarks and tourist attractions. We really enjoyed using iPads for research purposes and loved sharing what we learned about Germany with our classmates.  

Our class have been learning about Germany. We noticed that Germany has many famous castles so we decided to make our own. We took some inspiration from fairy-tales such as Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.  We found out that these tales were stories that were passed down from generation to generation and were first written down by the Grimm Brothers, who were from Germany.  Have a look at some of our castles. Today third class got a special visit from two fire officers from Carlow Fire Station. We learned a lot of important facts about fires; how to prevent fires, what to do if a fire was to breakout and the numbers to call if there was a fire. We learned the golden rule of fires; to Get Out, Stay Out and Call Out. We are now going to complete a fire safety check at home to help reduce the risk of fires.

The three Third Class groups enjoyed orienteering in the lovely weather on Tuesday afternoon. Thank you to Mr Shiel for organising and hiding controls around the school grounds. Third Class had great fun using their map skills to find each control. 

Seomra 28 enjoyed a minibeast hunt on Friday. The children walked around the school grounds in search of minibeasts. They were thrilled with their results and identified an abundance of different minibeasts using a simple key. 

Our camogie team travelled to Mountmellick today for their first game. The girls displayed a great performance but unfortunately were defeated by a strong Mountmellick side. Well done to the girls and best wishes with their upcoming games.

Easter art fun in Rang 6.

At assembly today we heard Mr Bolton and Mr Kelly’s guitar groups and presented certificates to our Students of the Week and Gaeilgeoiri na Seachtaine.

Well done to our pupils who attended 58 out of 58 days this Term. 95% attenders also received certificates.

Room 10 decorated their own Easter Eggs! Wishing everyone a happy Easter!

Second class have been learning about Space. Here is a picture of their wonderful display!

Room 12 are taking part in the incredible edibles programme this year. Today we planted potatoes, carrot seeds, chives seeds, lettuce and strawberries! We can’t wait to see how they grow over the next few weeks.
