Celebrating World Autism Day

World Autism Awareness Day Tuesday April 2nd 2019

World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) aims to put a spotlight on the hurdles that people with autism – and others living with autism – face every day.  World Autism Awareness Day goes one step further to celebrate the unique talents of those with autism, while putting a huge focus on the warm embrace and welcome that these skills deserve through community events around the globe.  Fourth class pupil Levi Culleton spoke to the assembled classes on the subject on Friday last, explaining the difficulties that autistic people encounter daily. He proudly stated that he is very happy in St. Fiacc’s N.S.

Here are the words spoken by Levi to the assembly:

“Greetings, students and teachers.

My name is Levi and I would like to talk about autism.

To some of ye who know me, I have autism.  I look the very same as all of ye; the only difference is that my brain is wired different.  I’m very proud of who I am as having autism does not change me.

I can still do the same as someone who does not have autism.

I do find it difficult to sit in one spot and also to make friends and I don’t like loud noises or people shouting at me, but hey!  I’m still me!

Sometimes I get upset and angry and I find it hard to express myself and to feel ok again.

But on a happy note I love coming to school at St. Fiacc’s and just being….  LEVI!

Thank you all!”

Well done Levi! To celebrate World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd, the pupils are encouraged to wear in their favourite t-shirt!

World Book Day :)

IMG-1929 IMG-1930 IMG-1931 IMG-1933 IMG-1934 IMG-1935 IMG-1948 IMG-1950 IMG-1951

We had a wonderful day during World Book Day. Some students dressed as their favourite characters. We also brought our favourite book to school. We are currently learning about persuasive writing so we wrote why we think our book is the best book in the world. Throughout the day, Miss Kavanagh read a page from all the books that were brought into school and some children read their books in Polish. It was a really interesting and fun day. Teacher also shared her favourite book!
We hope we persuaded some of you to read our favourite books!

Engineer’s Week 2019

IMG-1921 IMG-1922 IMG-1923 IMG-1924 IMG-1925 IMG-1937 IMG-1938IMG-1936

During Engineer’s Week, room 10 focused on how to build sustainable towns.  We discussed climate change and global warming. We discussed how we can do better. Together in small groups we became engineers and designed a town for the future.  Our towns have electric cars, safer cycle lanes, trees, plants, bridges, wind turbines, recycling bins, solar panels etc. We really enjoyed designing these towns and maybe some day we will be engineers in the future!

We also looked at the importance of 3 – d shapes in designing and making structures in our environment. We made 3 – d shapes and completed a 3 – d shape hunt both in  school and at home.

It was a fun week!

RE MOMO

We have had many calls in from schools wanting handouts on the game Momo.

Momo has been around for the last 18 months and is not new.  The media have managed to whip up a bit of a frenzy amongst parents.  It was originally an app but that has been removed and it is now scary videos that are being distributed via WhatsApp, YouTube and online gaming (live streaming).

It is scary.  Even I was sitting on the edge of my seat watching it, and for a 7-year-old? – yes, it would scare them.  A simple tip is to turn off ‘auto play’ on YouTube and ensure that your contact details are hidden on WhatsApp.  Make sure the ‘no fill’ option is ‘on’ within Fortnite and all settings within your Xbox and PlayStation are closed.

Although MOMO is not nice, I agree with the article linked below, that the media have over-dramatised it.  You should be aware that there are much worse things on YouTube than this.  Don’t spread the panic about Momo – get involved and supervise what your young children are watching, whatever it may be.

Magnets

We played with magnets in our classroom to see what they can do. We found out that magnets can attract and repel. We played with different types of magnets and tested them out to see which one was the strongest. We had lots of fun with magnets.1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
